00:00:00's falls hopes and quick fixes.
00:00:04>> Reporter: He drives home a common gripe here.
00:00:07>> It is the whole coast.
00:00:09Seven and a half miles of beach.
00:00:10>> Reporter: Every day more oil hits this coastline and resentment deepens with amuck.
00:00:17Where is the sense of urgency?
00:00:19>> There is nobody here.
00:00:23There is no cleanup crews here.
00:00:26>> Reporter: They are up and down the beach.
00:00:301100 People in all work on grand isle's cleanup but only 250 of them are in hazmat suits shoveling oil off this seven- mile beach, the so-called hot zone.
00:00:40>> The hot zone is where there is an oil impact.
00:00:44>> Reporter: But cleanup coordinators say crews can work only 20 minutes of every hour.
00:00:49>> Due to the heat and humidity we have to give people a break.
00:00:53It is a number 1 safety issue when working in this environment.
00:00:56>> Reporter: And an even harsher environment a mile under sea b.p.
00:01:01Says its latest fix is working.
00:01:03Its new containment cap over the broken wellhead is sucking more oil to a surface ship.
00:01:12250,000-Gallons on friday.
00:01:14441,000-Gallons or 10,000- barrels on saturday.
00:01:18But many scientists believe much more oil is still bleeding into the gulf every day.
00:01:22>> We have a further containment of system to implement in the course of this coming week which will be in place by next weekend.
00:01:32>> Reporter: But all that is too late to stop the millions of gallons already flowing in the gulf and in places like grande isle places in the bull's eye of the blob cleanup crews could work 24/7 but the damage is already done.
00:01:46Chris hernandez found another sad reminder of the oil's impact.
00:01:54>> Oh, gosh.
00:01:56Oh, poor things.
00:01:59It is heartbreaking.
00:02:00He is just a baby.
00:02:02>> Reporter: And remember that bird was found on the main beach here where cleanup crews work every day.
00:02:07Those crews have yet to even set foot on some neighbouring barrier islands where you will find most of the wildlife, the latest casualties of this disaster.
00:02:20Cbc news, grand isle, louisiana.
00:02:21>> Experts say it will be years before the full effect on the waters, marshlands along the coast will be realized.
00:02:31Crews rescued 30 turtles all endangered species.
00:02:35Pelicans and other birds are being rescued and many dead ones are washing up on beaches along with clumps of oil.
00:02:42>> One man filled two buckets with tar balls and tried to hand them to cleanup workers.
00:02:46>> He said that's not my job.
00:02:49So I got a little aggravated and I turned the two buckets upside down and dumped them in the sand and said is it your job now?
00:02:58And he drove off.
00:03:00>> Signs warning people to leave the cleanup to specially trained teams.
00:03:07>>> With just one day until the primary elections, election officials are predicting a low turnout.
00:03:17Most of the attention this final weekend is focused on state props.
00:03:21One of the most closely watched races could depend on the undecides.
00:03:27>> Reporter: Ann, with one more day before elections an exclusive cbs5 poll shows prop 16 too close to call.
00:03:3641% In favor.
00:03:3745% Opposed and 14% run decided.
00:03:40This is the ballot measure that will require local governments to get voter approval to use public money for electricity.
00:03:46An issue some are calling a power grab.
00:03:50You've probably heard a lot from pg &e and the folks behind prop 16.
00:03:57The campaign spent $46 million so far getting voters to pass it.
00:04:01Those opposed resort to news conferences like this one.
00:04:03>> It is obvious pg &e won't spend $46 million of rate payer money on a ballot measure for any reason except to handcuff consumers to their own monopoly.
00:04:18>> Reporter: A supervisor and state senator and now the speaker of thehouse nancy pelosi is on board with the opposition.
00:04:25Her chief of staff read a statement.
00:04:27>> I urge californians to vote no on prop 16.
00:04:31I have long supported public power.
00:04:38Prop >> Reporter: Opponents call prop 16 a power grab and say nearly every city and major newspaper is against it.
00:04:45>> There are literally over 60 cities in california that officially passed resolutions in opposing prop 16.
00:04:59That's never happened before.
00:05:01>> Reporter: But prop 16 spokeswoman robin swanson disputes that.
00:05:06>> There are plenty of newspapers that have endorsed prop 16 as well including the orange county register, l.a.
00:05:13Daily news, newspapers up and down california.
00:05:16So we could play the endorsement game just as well as they could.
00:05:20>>> Among those endorsing prop 16 is the san francisco chamber of commerce.
00:05:26Sue kwon was told that reliability is more important than projected savings.
00:05:29>> There have been bad examples of failures in the power generation business at the local level and that voters need to have that opportunity to say yes or no.
00:05:39>> Reporter: Prop 16 would require a supermajority, a two thirds vote for communities to take on public power.
00:05:45Marin county already moved ahead on a public power plant without a vote.
00:05:49>> Marin county has shown that greener, more sustainable and at the same cost of power and they move forward with it.
00:05:57>> Reporter: Pg &e has been putting money on the yes and outspending the opposition by about 500 to 1.

00:06:08>>> The body of an 11-year-old girl who disappeared into the water near the pittsburgh marina has been recovered.
00:06:15Witnesses say jasmine jones was playing on some rocks at riverview park about 7:00 p.m.
00:06:20Last night when she fell into the water.
00:06:22This is the second drowning in two days in contra costa county.
00:06:27Julie watts on what parents can do to keep their children safe.
00:06:34>> Reporter: The picnic table stood empty today at the riverview park in pittsburgh.
00:06:38All of the activity was in the water at contra costa county rescue divers recovered the body of an 11-year-old girl 15 hours after he she slipped off rocks while playing with friends at a birthday party.
00:06:52>> Was I surprised?
00:06:55Probably not.
00:06:55>> Reporter: Shannon riley lives nearby and is always worried about the safety of kids playing in this murky delta waters but those concerns are now heightened in light of this tragic death and the changing seasons.
00:07:06This marks the second bay area drowning in just two days.
00:07:09On friday a little boy drowned in a pool at a family barbecue not far from here.
00:07:14In both cases there were adults nearby and in both cases the child did not know how to swim.
00:07:20>> Reporter: The coastguard says this is something they see every year as temperatures rise, so do the number of water- related accidents and it is time to remind parents about water safety.
00:07:30>> If your child is underage, smaller children you should always keep an eye on them.
00:07:36Know what they are doing at all times.
00:07:38>> Reporter: The number 1 rule of thumb when around water never take your eyes off your child.
00:07:43They also suggest both you and your child know how to swim.
00:07:46According to the army corps of engineers two thirds of people who drowned never intended to go into the water and they drown within 30 feet of safety.
00:07:56The coastguard also suggests keeping a life jacket on your kid at all times.
00:08:01>> Especially with the environment of the delta area, rivers with the currents, I do suggest all parents should have their kids in life jackets.
00:08:08>> Reporter: It is a suggestion shannon hopes parents take seriously especially here and especially now.
00:08:14>> And you're going to see more and more kids come here.
00:08:17They come here a lot.
00:08:20Like a lot.
00:08:20>> Reporter: And the coastguard warns water safety isn't just for kids.
00:08:25Drowning is the second leading cause of death for people ages 15 to 44.

00:08:34>>> It was supposed to be a night of celebration instead a graduation party ended in tragedy.
00:08:41The party that went horriblely wrong.
00:08:46>> Didn't deserve to die.
00:08:48>> Reporter: Friends of the 18- year-old still can't believe he is gone.
00:08:53>> I was at another party and a friend of mine told me deandre got killed and I said you are lying.
00:09:00>> Reporter: The basketball player had just graduated but what should have been the start of his adult life ended suddenly late last night when he was shot and killed at a graduation party here at this holiday inn express.
00:09:11>> Apparently the victim was shot in that stairwell area and then made his way upstairs to the third floor where he collapsed on the ground.
00:09:19>> Reporter: Blackwell had gotten into an altercation with a group of young men who showed up to the party after a widespread text message was sent out.
00:09:26>> Which increased the number of attendees from probably less than 20 two probably 50 to 60 individuals inside the hotel.
00:09:35>> Reporter: Hotel guests, many in town for weddings or graduation celebrations were stunned someone had been killed in their hotel.
00:09:43>> A little scary.
00:09:43But some people who were on the second floor could not get to their room.
00:09:49>> Sitting in the hallways.
00:09:51People were getting blankets and pillows because it was going to be a long night.
00:09:54>> Reporter: Today the excitement at this valley high basketball camp overshadowed by the death of a young man who had barely begun to live out his dreams.
00:10:03>> He said he did not know he was going to graduate and when he walked across the stage i was so proud.

00:10:14An arrest in a deadly stabbing in castro valley.
00:10:19A 35-year-old is accused of stabbing his 26-year-old girlfriend yesterday in her home.
00:10:24Authorities say they had been at the home on domestic violence calls.
00:10:33>>> A rally for immigration reform drew hundreds of people to san francisco today.
00:10:37Demonstrators say the country needs comprehensive reform not what they call enforcement only laws like the one passed in arizona.
00:10:46The rally was organized by several groups in the bay area.
00:10:50>>> A dozen gun advocates express their right to carry arms at an event in san jose.
00:10:59They say the laws are unconstitutional.
00:11:01Right now state law allows people to carry unloaded handguns in public but a bill working its way through sacramento right now would ban them.

00:13:18>>> At least seven people are dead after tornadoes and thunderstorms ripped through the midwest.
00:13:23The deadly weather left a path of destruction from illinois to pennsylvania.
00:13:34>> Reporter: A tornado ripped apart a high school just hours before graduation ceremonies were to take place.
00:13:41Some area residents were inside when the twister hit.
00:13:44>> I didn't know it was this close.
00:13:47I didn't know that this is what the high school was going to look like.
00:13:50So the fact that we were in that building and survived it was like, oh, my god.
00:13:55>> Reporter: The tornado cut a path of destruction 7 miles long.
00:13:59More than 50 homes were destroyed.
00:14:02Violent thunderstorms and tornadoes also hit parts of michigan, indiana and illinois.
00:14:06Storm chasers caught up with this funnel cloud.
00:14:09>> That is not good.
00:14:10>> Reporter: Strong winds tore the roof off this hog farm in carroll county.
00:14:20A radio antenna was in jeopardy of coming down.
00:14:22>> Strands are loose and it is sagging so we are waiting for the structural people to get here.
00:14:28>> Reporter: And cleanup had begun in elmwood, illinois.
00:14:35The roof of a movie theater collapsed and city hall was severely damaged.
00:14:39The severe weather is heading east.
00:14:41Tornado watches were posted sunday for most of new england.

00:14:53The weekend itself is almost over but the weather will be changing here in the next couple days, folks.

00:15:54As we head towards the middle of the week cold front will dive into the bay area bringing more clouds and much cooler temperatures probably well below the average for this time of year.

00:16:26Once that moves by gets pretty windy into thursday and then as we head towards this next weekend here is the good news.
00:16:33Winds will switch directiones becoming more offshore and we will see much warmer temperatures as we head toward the latter part of next weekend but again this week probably cooler than normal through the middle of the week.

00:20:25As usual apple is being coy about what will be announced in steve jobs key note speech tomorrow.
00:20:34But developrs who spend $1500 a piece for this conference, they have pretty good guesses.

00:20:41>> Reporter: And probably an excellent guest.
00:20:46Last year was the new 3gf iphone with the faster processor, video camera and longer battery life.
00:20:54In 2008 jobs announced more affordable iphones.
00:20:59>> The iphone 3g is going to sell for $199.
00:21:06>> Reporter: This year these software folks already know what the new iphone will have.
00:21:10>> I think the front facing camera will be great.
00:21:13>> In addition to the back facing one?

00:21:18That means for us developers we can make more apps that do more things.
00:21:23>> I have heard higher resolution screens.
