00:00:00Used by the old renault, which was really only effective against concrete pillboxes.
00:00:06So let's just see exactly how good it is up against a chunk of 1-inch steel plate.
00:00:13All right, I hear you.
00:00:15You're saying, "gunny, that's " well, score one for the sherlock on the sofa.
00:00:22I said it was representational of a tank.
00:00:25Now shut your cake hole 'cause i need to focus.
00:00:29I'm itching to pull the trigger on this bad boy.
00:00:51Oh, yeah!
00:00:52I'm liking that!
00:01:04Oh, ho ho!
00:01:07So I see one, two, three penetrations.
00:01:11But the rounds that penetrate don't hit the steel plates square on.
00:01:15The one round that does bounces off.
00:01:18Remember, the german armor is a lot thicker than this.
00:01:23Bang!
00:01:25Went in just like that.
00:01:27>> Yep.
00:01:28>> Gunny: And then bounced out.
00:01:29That's pretty cool, huh?
00:01:30Mushroomed it a little bit.
00:01:32But it didn't penetrate.
00:01:34You see, this gun is old technology, designed to take out small fries like the renault, which has armor like aluminum foil by comparison.
00:01:45This gun just couldn't keep pace with the arms race.
00:01:49Hell, all they'd do is give the tankers inside a bad headache and a bad attitude.
00:01:54It was kind of like trying to kill a bear with a b.b. gun.
00:01:57We need something bigger.
00:02:21With a longer barrel, bigger bore and a heavier shell, the 57-millimeter has a lot more punching power than the little 37-millimeter gun.
00:02:31This one here is owned by dan dolan.
00:02:34His hobby just happens to be tank busting.
00:02:37Now, look at the shells on this gun.
00:02:40We're talking this little guy was the 37.
00:02:43We said we needed something a little bigger to get these tanks out of commission.
00:02:49So, well, we went to this-- this guy right here, right?
00:02:54Now who said size doesn't matter, huh?
00:02:56>> Well, the bullet weighs three times as much.
00:02:59It has three times as much muzzle energy as the 37-millimeter gun.
00:03:03>> Gunny: I'll bet we could probably blow that car off the face of the earth, what do you think?
00:03:08>> Well, we'll try and bust the back door off.
00:03:10I think we ought to pull the trigger.
00:03:12>> Gunny: I'm ready.
00:03:13>> Let's go.
00:03:20>> Gunny: I'm ready.
00:03:22Take that sucker off safe.
00:03:25..2...1...
00:03:36Whoa!
00:03:38Dan the man, I think we hit it!
00:03:41Let's shoot it one more time.
00:03:43You guys having as much fun as I am?
00:03:46Come on.
00:03:47Come on, dan the man!
00:03:48Let's put some lead downrange.
00:03:51(grunts) ..2...3...
00:04:02Oh, we did some serious damage to it, no question about it.
00:04:05>> Look at the way it peeled the metal back on the 1-inch plate.
00:04:08>> Gunny: Isn't that neat?
00:04:09That's something, isn't it?
00:04:10>> It tore the door off.
00:04:12>> Gunny: The 57-millimeter packs quite a punch.
00:04:16But it lacked mobility and speed.
00:04:19What we needed on the battlefields was something that could run down a panzer and kill it, bring it to its knees.
00:04:26What we needed, basically, was hell on wheels, or in this case, tracks.
00:04:37Now that's what I call an entrance!
00:04:40Ladies and gentlemen, the m18 hellcat tank destroyer.
00:04:45When it absolutely has to be destroyed overnight, that's the bad boy you call!
00:05:16The hellcat came on the scene in december of 1944 during the battle of the bulge, and this little cat gave the german panzers plenty of hell.
00:05:28Now some of you might be thinking, "gunny, this just " well, let me enlighten you.
00:05:35Army doctrine states, a tank is designed to advance and attack in support of infantry.
00:05:43The m18 hellcat was designed with a different mission in mind-- to kill tanks.
00:05:49You got that?
00:05:52>> What they would do is they'd move really rapidly, faster than the germans could track the tank destroyers with their turrets, because all the german tanks and tank destroyers had manually cranked turret drives.
00:06:05>> Gunny: They may look like kittens alongside a tiger, but the hellcats could outrun the enemy any day of the week in world war ii.
00:06:16They become masters at stalking the lumbering tigers, speeding up behind them and getting shots into the tiger's weakest armor, right up the old patooty.
00:06:27The hellcat is only lightly armored with one-inch thick plating at the front.
00:06:33But the plating was angled at 45 degrees, which helped deflect the impact of enemy rounds and increased its effectiveness.
00:06:42Let's check out the gun, buddy.
00:06:43The steel plating on that car is just like the armor on the rear of a tiger.
00:06:48We're aiming at the enemy's most vulnerable point.
00:06:53Okay!
00:06:54All right, boys, I've had just about enough of that car!
00:06:58Lock and load!
00:07:04>> Gunny: Fire!
00:07:06(explosion) Whoa!
00:07:10>> Son of a bitch!
00:07:21>> Gunny: You can see how this 76-millimeter gun helped our boys push the germans back across the rhine, where they belong.
00:07:30..
00:07:32Ah-ha.
00:07:33Did we learn our lesson, you stupid car?
00:07:38Yeah, finally dead, aren't we?
00:07:41Oh, ho ho.
00:07:43Dan, old buddy, I think we are victorious.
00:07:46Look what you did to this car.
00:07:47>> It's dead.
00:07:48>> Gunny: The whole right side of the engine is gone.
00:07:51Oh, my goodness.
00:07:56Now, who would have thought in just nine short years, our military went from the 37-millimeter to the bad-ass 57-millimeter to the high-speed death machine that is the 76-millimeter hellcat?
00:08:16Absolutely total destruction.
00:08:18That's why america won the war, dan.
00:08:22>> That's it, bigger and better guns.
00:08:24>> Gunny: Now, if you enjoy automotive annihilation like i do, then you won't want to miss the crushing power of the m60 when I come back.

00:12:36Okay, let's go over where we've been so far.
00:12:39Settle down and shut your pie hole 'cause I'm only going over this once.
00:12:45In world war i, the first tanks appeared on the battlefield.
00:12:49The guns hot!
00:12:54By world war ii, bruisers like the sherman and the german tiger were going head to head.
00:13:00But just as valuable were light tanks like the stuart with its speed and agility.
00:13:09After the second world war, tanks cemented their place in every battle plan, and engineers got to thinking about the next generation.
00:13:44Named after george patton, the m60 was built as a direct response to the new generation of russian tanks that appeared IN THE '50s.
00:13:54Faster, bigger gun, and with the tank to date, the m60 eventually became our first space-age tank.
00:14:06And dan little here knows what makes the m60 tick.
00:14:10What sets this tank aside from the other ones up to this date?
00:14:14>> So main thing that set this one apart was they added a ruby laser range finder, a ballistics computer which would go in and compensate for wind, humidity, temperature changes.
00:14:25Before, when you're shooting at a target, the commander would have to kind of guess how to lob the shell out to hit the target at a different range based on their experiences and stuff.
00:14:32This here would tell the computer, "hey, this is it's where it's at.
00:14:35Here's where to point the barrel to hit it," and it would shoot and nail it.
00:14:38>> Gunny: Before the late '70s, a tank's targeting system was only as good as the gunner's skill.
00:14:44Range was an educated guess.
00:14:48In 1978, the third-generation m60, a3, featured a groundbreaking thermal sight with a laser rangefinder.
00:14:57From this, a computer calculated the target's exact range and position.
00:15:02It also calculated the precise trajectory or ballistic arc needed to land a round on its nose.
00:15:10A screen showed the gunner where to aim, and bingo, he just hits the trigger.
00:15:17Now I'm sure that the geeks among you out there will be very pleased about this computational hoo-ha.
00:15:25But there are other features that make m60 one heck of an off-road vehicle.
00:15:31In world war ii, the sherman tank had trouble overcoming obstacles, especially nazi tank traps, which would stop them dead in their tracks.
00:15:42Post-war, producing a tank that could drive over just about anything became a top priority, and the m60 had the horsepower and track width to do just that.
00:15:55The m60 was designed to overcome all kinds of obstacles, especially fighting in an urban setting.
00:16:03It came into its own in vietnam in 1968, the battle for the city of hue.
00:16:11Street fighting at its nastiest, the m60 made a path for the marines block by block, making sure the way was clear, going through walls, over all kinds of debris and all sorts of barriers.
00:16:27How much of a barrier?
00:16:28Well, there's only one way to find that out now, isn't there?
00:16:32It's time to give you a personal demonstration of the m60's all- terrain capabilities.
00:16:38I'm letting it loose in the urban environment it's designed for.
00:16:42Come on, let's go drive over that big cadillac.
00:16:45Come on, let's go.
00:16:46Rock and roll.
00:16:47All right, let's go get it.

00:17:13That is some cool stuff.
00:17:1560 Tons, that's what this baby weighs, and we just went right over top of that cadillac.
00:17:21Apart from their service in vietnam, the m60 spent three decades babysitting the cold war border in western europe.
00:17:30It wasn't until 1991 that it got let off the leash again in kuwait.
00:17:37Iraq invaded the oil-rich kingdom.
00:17:40RUSSIAN-MADE T54s WENT HEAD TO Head against our tanks.
00:17:45The m60's 105-millimeter cannon out-blasted the t54's 100- millimeter gun.
00:17:53Add in your tanks' state-of-the-art laser and thermal sight and no wonder the m60 won hands-down.
00:18:03And you can bet they got to do a little crushing over there, too.
00:18:07All right, let's rock.
00:18:11It's time for me to finish the job here.

00:23:23>> Gunny: Tanks were king of the battlefield for almost half- century.
00:23:30And it's no different in the cold war, when the m60 patton rolled into the picture, a heavy-duty fighting machine.
00:23:38It was an all-rounder, equally at home in the desert and the tropics.
00:23:44The m60 served us well for many years, but with the explosion of technology that came during the cold war, our peacetime military had plenty time for r&d to get the next-generation tank just right.
00:24:21Finally, the biggest, meanest steel monster ever.
00:24:26Designed to give the usa supreme power on any battlefield, it's the backbone of the u.s.
00:24:33Military's armored forces, the world's ultimate chariot of war.
00:24:38Now, we're talking the latest in high-tech armor, advanced anti-ballistic technology, three high-powered machine guns, and the icing on the cake is a hair-raising, earth-shaking 120-millimeter main gun that'll blast the bad guys back into next week!
00:24:58Would you believe no abrams tank has ever been destroyed by enemy fire?
00:25:03And that's because it's protected by something the brits invented, chobham armor.
00:25:09Now this is top-secret stuff, but icantell you it combines metal, ceramics and air pockets.
00:25:17When an incoming round hits, the ceramic deforms the round, preventing any further penetration.
00:25:24The air pockets prevent the shock of impact traveling through to the cabin.
00:25:30Yep, a tank that can't be killed.
00:25:33It just keeps going after the bad guys.
00:25:36Sergeant jacobson here says that the abrams has a whole bag of tricks that give the usa the edge in battle.
00:25:44>> Gunny: Okay, jake, let's see how much I know.
00:25:48To accelerate, you pull back.
00:25:51Now, what happens when I want to turn?
00:25:54That turns it left?
00:25:55>> That's it.
00:25:57>> Gunny: And that takes it right.
00:25:59>> Just like a bike, that's it.
00:26:01>> Gunny: No quick movement.
00:26:02Where's the on/off switch?
00:26:04>> The on/off switch is right here.
00:26:05>> Gunny: That's the ignition switch, basically.
00:26:08Okay, the green light probably indicates on.
00:26:11>> It's on.
00:26:12>> Gunny: See how sharp I am?
00:26:13>> That's it.
00:26:14>> Gunny: I'm not as dumb as i look, am i?
00:26:16I'm ready to go.
00:26:17I'm ready to drive.
00:26:18>> Well, let's go, gunny.
00:26:19>> Gunny: Let's rock.
00:26:21The abrams tips the scales at darn near 68 tons.
00:26:26Now, it's not only rugged like the sherman, but at more than 40 miles per hour, it's even faster than the little stuart.
00:26:34And it can lob even more metal further downrange than its predecessor, the good old m60.
00:26:41Nothing says superiority on the battlefield louder than this beautiful 120-millimeter cannon.
00:26:49Now let's put some steel downrange.
00:26:56(machinery whirring) All right, sergeant jacobson, let's go find something to kill.
00:27:03Previously, shooting on the move was a hit-and-miss affair.
00:27:07One bump can put your aim off- target, but the abrams introduced a gyro-stabilized barrel and turret.
00:27:16Electric motors hold the gun steady no matter what the rest of the tank's doing.
00:27:21This stabilized gun control means that the abrams can hold a steady shot while on the move.
00:27:28No shot is wasted.
00:27:33The fire-control computer is a major upgrade from the m60.
00:27:42It has improved range and accuracy and even factors in the heat of the barrel.
00:27:50And thermal imaging means it can shoot anytime, even in a dust storm.
00:27:59What do you think, sergeant jacobsen, should we lock and load?
00:28:02Should we get ready to fire this monster?
00:28:04>> Let's get ready to fire this thing, gunny.
00:28:06>> Gunny:..2...1...
00:28:14All right!
00:28:15That's what I like to hear.
00:28:17The shell leaves the barrel at close to 2 and a half thousand miles per hour.
00:28:34 tanks reign supreme.
00:28:38The russian-built opposition, with inferior firepower and armor is almost useless in sandstorms and darkness.
00:28:47The abrams' thermal imaging and supreme accuracy makes it deadly effective in all conditions.
00:28:55>> If you don't mind safing that, gunny?
00:29:00>> Gunny: Okay, the gun is safe.
00:29:01Inside the abrams, there's 90 years of invention.
00:29:05590 If we count da vinci's designs.
00:29:10It's just the perfect combination of every tank innovation since louis renault invented the rotating turret.
00:29:18It's agile like the stuart, has more killing power than ever, and gets its aim right with computer-control.
00:29:28Try to beat that.
00:29:31Well, there you have it, devil dogs, we have come a long way from the slow and steady tanks of world war I to the mean and mighty machines of today.
00:29:42 lee ermey.
00:29:44Keep your powder dry and your eyes on the target.

00:04:00>> Gunny: The 57-millimeter packs quite a punch.
00:04:04But it lacked mobility and speed.
00:04:07What we needed on the battlefields was something that could run down a panzer and kill it, bring it to its knees.
00:04:14What we needed, basically, was hell on wheels, or in this case, tracks.
00:04:25Now that's what I call an entrance!
00:04:28Ladies and gentlemen, the m18 hellcat tank destroyer.
00:04:33When it absolutely has to be destroyed overnight, that's the bad boy you call!
00:05:04The hellcat came on the scene in december of 1944 during the battle of the bulge, and this little cat gave the german panzers plenty of hell.
00:05:16Now some of you might be thinking, "gunny, this just " well, let me enlighten you.
00:05:23Army doctrine states, a tank is designed to advance and attack in support of infantry.
00:05:31The m18 hellcat was designed with a different mission in mind-- to kill tanks.
00:05:37You got that?
00:05:40>> What they would do is they'd move really rapidly, faster than the germans could track the tank destroyers with their turrets, because all the german tanks and tank destroyers had manually cranked turret drives.
00:05:53>> Gunny: They may look like kittens alongside a tiger, but the hellcats could outrun the enemy any day of the week in world war ii.
00:06:04They become masters at stalking the lumbering tigers, speeding up behind them and getting shots into the tiger's weakest armor, right up the old patooty.
00:06:15The hellcat is only lightly armored with one-inch thick plating at the front.
00:06:21But the plating was angled at 45 degrees, which helped deflect the impact of enemy rounds and increased its effectiveness.
00:06:30Let's check out the gun, buddy.

00:12:28In world war i, the first tanks appeared on the battlefield.
00:12:32The guns hot!
00:12:37By world war ii, bruisers like the sherman and the german tiger were going head to head.
00:12:43But just as valuable were light tanks like the stuart with its speed and agility.
00:12:52After the second world war, tanks cemented their place in every battle plan, and engineers got to thinking about the next generation.
00:13:27Named after george patton, the m60 was built as a direct response to the new generation of russian tanks that appeared IN THE '50s.
00:13:37Faster, bigger gun, and with the tank to date, the m60 eventually became our first space-age tank.
00:13:49And dan little here knows what makes the m60 tick.
00:13:53What sets this tank aside from the other ones up to this date?
00:13:57>> So main thing that set this one apart was they added a ruby laser range finder, a ballistics computer which would go in and compensate for wind, humidity, temperature changes.
00:14:08Before, when you're shooting at a target, the commander would have to kind of guess how to lob the shell out to hit the target at a different range based on their experiences and stuff.
00:14:15This here would tell the computer, "hey, this is it's where it's at.
00:14:18Here's where to point the barrel to hit it," and it would shoot and nail it.
00:14:21>> Gunny: Before the late '70s, a tank's targeting system was only as good as the gunner's skill.
00:14:27Range was an educated guess.
00:14:31In 1978, the third-generation m60, a3, featured a groundbreaking thermal sight with a laser rangefinder.
00:14:40From this, a computer calculated the target's exact range and position.
00:14:45It also calculated the precise trajectory or ballistic arc needed to land a round on its nose.
00:14:53A screen showed the gunner where to aim, and bingo, he just hits the trigger.
00:15:00Now I'm sure that the geeks among you out there will be very pleased about this computational hoo-ha.
00:15:08But there are other features that make m60 one heck of an off-road vehicle.
00:15:14In world war ii, the sherman tank had trouble overcoming obstacles, especially nazi tank traps, which would stop them dead in their tracks.
00:15:25Post-war, producing a tank that could drive over just about anything became a top priority, and the m60 had the horsepower and track width to do just that.
00:15:38The m60 was designed to overcome all kinds of obstacles, especially fighting in an urban setting.
00:15:47It came into its own in vietnam in 1968, the battle for the city of hue.
00:15:54Street fighting at its nastiest, the m60 made a path for the marines block by block, making sure the way was clear, going through walls, over all kinds of debris and all sorts of barriers.
