00:00:01Wayne ellington drops to three.
00:00:02Minnesota is up five.
00:00:03Later, it's love again from three.
00:00:06Give it to the big man.
00:00:08He had 35-11.
00:00:10What a night!
00:00:11Yeah!
00:00:12But how many blocks did you have, kevin?
00:00:13>> Zero.
00:00:14>> None!
00:00:15And you promised you'd have one!
00:00:17>> Not so good.
00:00:18>>> Quick check of the events in denver before we go.
00:00:23Heat-nuggets.
00:00:24Dwyane wade is extra good.
00:00:25He's spicy.
00:00:26This bucket and one.
00:00:27Will get his team within 156789 what we're having here with lebron is out with a sprained ankle.
00:00:32We're seeing how the heat would look if lebron had stayed in cleveland or perhaps was a knick.
00:00:38They're getting routed, 60-43 at the half.
00:00:42Two-shot set, go.
00:00:43>> It's midnight.
00:00:44Bonus five minutes of john anderson, scott van pelt and cam newton is headed to the nfl.
00:00:49He had the 50 touchdowns between rushing and passing, he had the heisman and b.c.s.
00:00:54Title.
00:00:54And like jay-z said, on to the next one.
00:00:58>> This decision took on, you know, a great deal for me and my family, and you know, after talking to coach chizik and coach malzahn, I think it's best that, you know, I make that next step in my career to forgo my senior season and to enter the nfl draft.
00:01:17It was a very hard decision for me, a bittersweet decision, especially after coming off of a great season at auburn.
00:01:26Auburn is a place that I can call home now.
00:01:30We set history this season.
00:01:32And winning the national championship, not only that but just having this spectacular season is something that the people of auburn can hang their hat on with an excellent legacy, these people and this team will be always the pinnacle of what auburn stand for.
00:01:51I think we raised the bar for auburn and what a way to go out.
00:01:59>> Todd mcshay on earlier, he has him late first round.
00:02:03He has him as a third quarterback overall.
00:02:05As for mel kiper, I'm sure those two will debate his decision from now until april.
00:02:10Mel likes blaine gabbert, top quarterback and then cam newton, ryan mallett and jake locker.
00:02:18>>> In the trash talking rivalry between the steelers and ravens, no player is safe, not even tom brady who doesn't play for either team.
00:02:28Terrell suggs was actually trying to compliment ben roethlisberger on sirius radio this afternoon when he ended up crushing brady, downplaying the quarterback's three super bowl wins by saying he's got the tuck rule incident and the videotaping of other team's practices.
00:02:43And then the real dig came when suggs noted in addition to super bowls and supermodels, brady, quote, gets to tell the referee when to throw the flag.
00:02:53Preferential treatment.
00:02:54Let's hope they play in two weeks.
00:02:56Right now it's facts with michael smith.
00:02:59Ed >>> michael smith here with the "coors light cold hard facts," back to finish off a six-pack of nfl questions with mark schlereth and herm edwards.
00:03:09Let's start with you, mark, aaron rodgers or matt ryan, which is playing better football?
00:03:16>> They're both playing great but if you push me on this, I'm going with aaron rodgers.
00:03:20The reason, when you have the playoff schedule and when things break down and you're faced with the blitz, I think aaron rodgers now is playing as well as any quarterback in the national football league.
00:03:28He can make plays not only with his arm but also with his feet, buying himself time.
00:03:33I think right now he is playing great football, especially when things break down.
00:03:36>> All right, herm.
00:03:38Matt ryan, the other guy, he had a 20-17 win in the final seconds earlier this year over green bay.
00:03:44Can the packers go in the georgia dome this time and beat matt ryan and the falcons?
00:03:49>> I don't think so.
00:03:50I think when you look at the atlanta falcons, they're a team that does a lot of things right.
00:03:54They don't get a lot of notoriety and haven't been on the stage a whole bunch but they're a team systematically can move the ball down the football field and matt ryan is a wonderful quarterback in the fourth quarter who seems to find a way to move his team in position to win games.
00:04:11>> All right.
00:04:12Seahawks, double-digit underdogs for the second straight week.
00:04:15Do they go in soldier field and upset chicago?
00:04:18They won there earlier this year.
00:04:20>> I don't think so.
00:04:20Week six they played there and gave up six sacks, tons of pressure on jay cutler, forced mistakes by the chicago bears offense.
00:04:28This is a different offense from a protection standpoint.
00:04:30They've gotten much better also from a play calling standpoint, for running the ball more efficiently, taking the ball out of jay cutler's hands, letting him manage the game more.
00:04:40He's done a great job from a maturity standpoint of sometimes understanding that a punt's not a bad thing, I'll take a sack and punt it and rely on our defense and special teams.
00:04:50I think the chicago bears are a much better team than the one you saw week six lose to the seahawks.
00:04:54>> Also a big difference going into chicago and soldier field in october versus going in january.
00:04:59That will do it for the "coors " >>> that's the end of the facts.
00:05:06"Nfl live "so I next captioning provided by espn, inc.

00:05:38>>> One head coaching vacancy remaining in the nfl after the denver broncos hire john fox to be their head coach.
00:05:46Fox's contract was not renewed in carolina after a 2-14 season.
00:05:48He takes over the broncos.
00:05:52Cleveland has found its new head coach, it is pat shurmur.
00:05:57 were in philadelphia together.
00:06:05Shurmur is cleveland's fifth head coach since 1989, succeeding eric mangini let go after just two seasons.
00:06:10Did you know shurmur played linebacker, guard and center?
00:06:14He was an assistant coach on andy reid's staff in philadelphia for ten seasons WHERE HE GROOMED donovan McNam, and helping sam bradford enjoy a rookie season.
00:06:34" eric, the last couple of years, your browns were competitive, made improvements.
00:06:50This franchise had one playoff appearance in 13 years, what does pat shurmur inherit to turn the browns into a winning football team?
00:06:54>> Well I think pat is a good hire.
00:06:56I interviewed him in new york before interviewing, brian schottenheimer, it was a function of what system I wanted as opposed to who the guy was.
00:07:05I thought he was really smar really bright and a good coach.
00:07:08That was a good fit.
00:07:11His familiarity with tom hekert, that will help.
00:07:19He has a locker room that i think is disciplined, guys that know how to work and guys that will accept what his program and, work for him and work for his program, and i think that, that is going to give him a good head start.
00:07:32>> All right.
00:07:33Denver hires john fox.
00:07:34Mark, you know the program obviously very well.
00:07:35What do you think of john fox going to coach the broncos?
00:07:36>> I think he has a lot of work to do.
00:07:38Ultimately, that is the biggest thing.
00:07:43I think denver has been so inundated over four years with offensive coaches that finally john elway gets in there and says "guys we have to go to " john fox is dynamic.
00:07:53He's one of those guys that players like to play for.
00:07:57He comes from a great defensive background and has been a great defensive coach in this league.
00:08:01>> John fox is a very good defensive coordinator.
00:08:04What they need to do, they have had older personnel there.
00:08:06Gone from a 3-4, 4-3, 3-4.
00:08:08All kind of changes defensively.
00:08:12He will get that corrected.
00:08:16The key in my opinion for his success in denver who is the quarterback?
00:08:18Who is the quarterback?
00:08:18That will be the key for john fox.
00:08:20He knows that.
00:08:21He will fix the defense.
00:08:22Who is going to be the quarterback, is tim tebow the future of this football team?
00:08:28Kyle orton, that's the big decision in my opinion.
00:08:30>> Your team was last team to beat the new england patriots about to face another one of your guy's old teams, jets in the afc divisional playoff game coming up.
00:08:39This is way back in week nine but it feels like forever since the patriots have lost.
00:08:44Take a look back, third quarter, browns up, 17-7.
00:08:45colt McCoy will scramble for 16 yards and a touchdown.
00:08:48This is a young man thrust in due to injuries.
00:08:55Supposed to red shirt this year, but he's a spark for the browns.
00:08:56Puts the browns up 24-7 here.
00:08:57Fourth quarter.
00:08:57Peyton hillis, monster game.
00:08:58Bounce it offside.
00:09:02Takes the carry 35 yards for the touchdown.
00:09:05Peyton hillis, 184 yards on the ground in this game.
00:09:09The browns would go on to win 34-14.
00:09:12A gatorade shower for eric mangini.
00:09:13Much happier times.
00:09:17It can be done, beating the patriots that is.
00:09:23In week nine they ran for 230 yards and possessed the ball for 38 minutes, but all they have done is make the patriots angry because they have gone on to win eight in a row.
00:09:35What is the key to beating the new england patriots.
00:09:36What did you guys do?
00:09:37>> The first thing we did was make sure we can try to keep tom brady off the field as long as possible.
00:09:40You saw where the time of possession was.
00:09:44We wanted to put together long sustained drives that ended in points.
00:09:50The longer we could keep them off the field, the less opportunity he was going to have to score, which he is eventually going to do that as good as he is.
00:09:57The other thing, mike, is you can't give him pre-snap information.
00:10:03And, he is going to look at things.
00:10:05He is going to do everything he can to gather information on what the defense is doing and if you give him the same looks, if he knows it goes.
00:10:13And we moved guys around from where they were, changing linebacker spots, focused on the skies all during the week, and told the guys if you are not lying you are not trying.
00:10:21Everybody had to do it.
00:10:23Nobody could be the tell there.
00:10:28The other thing is, going into the second half, we had a different plan we were going to use.
00:10:30Saying, they're going to make the adjustment based on what we have done in the first half.
00:10:33Now we have got to bring something out that is different that he hasn't seen to this point in the game.
00:10:37Let them try to figure that out.
00:10:39Then we can go back to the other stuff that we used initially.
00:10:44>> All right.
00:10:44The browns and the jets were the only teams to beat the patriots this season.
00:10:50What was the key to beating new england?
00:10:52>> I learned this in the meeting talked to eric, how do you run the ball against the three-four, what is your basic theme?
00:10:56As you told me in the meetings, you said, hey, we want to attack the c gap.
00:11:05Get after the c gap.
00:11:05That is the weakness of the defense.
00:11:09We want to push guys and use counter the here you see it, right here, use a little counter action.
00:11:16Fullback lead counter.
00:11:17And you have a big beast they're playing, running back, fullback in hillis.
00:11:25A goal line defense, right?
00:11:29>> Goal line defense, they're trying to stop us in this four-minute offense.
00:11:40>> You popped it up right there.
00:11:42Jets do it differently.
00:11:43This is basically just a zone play here.
00:11:44What you are doing is attacking the c gap once again with a fake bubble screen look on the edge.
00:11:46There is the softness of the defense.
00:11:48If you are going to beat the new england patriots.
00:11:49You have to be able to possess the ball.
00:11:50You have to be able to keep tom brady off of the football field.
00:11:52If you can do that, then you can be successful the but to do that, you have got to be effective running the ball.
00:11:55>> A couple of defensive guys over here in herm and eric.
00:12:01You both know a lot about the match up and rivalry.
00:12:02Jets as you mention they want to keep tom brady off the field.
00:12:06When he is on the field, herm what is the key for jets slowing him down?
00:12:10>> I think you have to concentrate on first down.
00:12:12The big down is third.
00:12:13Really, first down is connected to third this way.
00:12:15You have got to create some negative plays where the new england patriots are behind the chains.
00:12:24In other words the train is delayed.
00:12:25That offense is all about keeping the train on schedule.
00:12:27You want to get the new england patriots in third and sixes or more.
00:12:36Brady has to hold the ball.
00:12:37Disguise your coverage.
00:12:38Move people around.
00:12:38You have the ability to do that.
00:12:39You also have ability to bring pressure.
00:12:40He can't get the ball out of his hand.
00:12:44If he does get it out and it's long distance, make the tackle get off the field.
00:12:47Don't want to put him on the field.
00:12:48You want to take the clock away from tom brady and possessions.
00:12:50>> I think that is one thing the jets do well.
00:12:51They create negative runs.
00:12:53They create a lot of negative runs.
00:12:56I think that is going to be a positive for him.
00:12:58And they have got cornerbacks they can go up and play man-to-man coverage.
00:13:02They can do things with their blitz package and their coverage package that not a lot of teams can do.
00:13:05I think that will help them too.
00:13:06>> I always look at this as a rhythmic offense.
00:13:09They're a spread offense, man the they want to pull different personnel groupings.
00:13:14They want to spread you thin.
00:13:17Throw the football.
00:13:18If you tackle well, then you can stay as herm said, keep them off schedule, keep them behind the chains.
00:13:28And you get in third down and seven plus situations, you can bring blitz.
00:13:34Make tom brady dump it off.
00:13:35You hope that is the theory the you hope the blitz gets there.
00:13:36Rally, make a tackle.
00:13:37Get off the football field.
00:13:37>> They're incredibly patient.
00:13:38Incredibly patient.
00:13:40And he's going to find what weakness is.
00:13:45If he can look -- well, bill and tom, if tom can look and see where the weakness is off that defense and know is he going to go to it, it creates problems, because, you're trying to stop one thing.
00:13:59He knows what it is.
00:14:00He goes with it.
00:14:00Against us, he ran the same run six times in a row.
00:14:02We didn't even have a chance to breathe.
00:14:03And they were just chopping it down the field because he'll exploit it once he has got it.
00:14:05>> That says something about the mindset of the new england patriots.
00:14:11Generally in a football game, eric knows this, he has been a head coach, you sit there with your offensive coordinator.
00:14:17You have just run a big play.
00:14:18Then all of a sudden you never get back to the play until third quarter.
00:14:20Well you made ten yards on that.
00:14:21What happened?
00:14:21New england patriots are not that way.
00:14:24When they see you a little bit weak in an area, they will attack until you fix it.
00:14:28If you think they're not coming back, they're coming back.
00:14:32>> You know what I've always said about the great coaches?
00:14:35I've played for a bunch of great coaches, and against a bunch of great coachers.
00:14:39The great ones are play repeaters.
00:14:40When something works.
00:14:41We are not going to go away from it.
00:14:42We are going to continue to pound down your gullet until you stop us.
00:14:45That, to me, especially as an offensive guy, when I can be in that system and when we can do that, boy you can see it deflate a defense.
00:14:52>> Eric, let me ask you about the jets' offense.
00:14:54The last time the two teams played, sanchez has had as many receptions as points.
00:15:04What can allow them to be successful this time around you hired brian schottenheimer in new york.
00:15:07>> I hired brian.
00:15:07He ran the same system we faced in san francisco.
00:15:09There was shifting, things you had to adjust to.
00:15:11New england and the defense i ran in cleveland, it is rule based.
00:15:16And if you line up in initial formation you have 11 calls you have to make, the team shifts.
00:15:24There is 11 more calls that have to be made, then you have a motion, 11 more calls that have to be made.
00:15:30>> A lot of thinking.
00:15:31>> You're talking 33 communications that take place within one play.
00:15:35Now you have got a young defensive group.
00:15:36You can create some opportunities if you can play fast and have effective shifts and motions and that was brian's background.
00:15:43And we had trouble with them, so that's why I wanted to bring him to new york.
00:15:45>> Beside all that, jets have a lot of history going against them.
00:15:50This is the sixth time that the patriots have erbed a first round bye since the current playoff format was adopted in '90st, AND IN EACH OF THE Previous five instances they would only reach the super bowl that is not going to happen this week.
00:16:10Lawrence taylor will receive six years probation, but no jail time after he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of sexual misconduct and patronizing a prostitute.
00:16:14Taylor was arrested in may for having sex with a 16-year-old prostitute.
00:16:16Taylor pleaded not guilty to third degree rape, patronizing a prostitute, sexual abuse, endangering a child and had been reluctant to strike a plea deal for months.
00:16:26>>> Coming up, a second showdown in the second city on sunday.
00:16:31What must chicago do to keep them from coming into soldier field and winning for a second time?
00:16:36Buckle your chinstrap for the latest installment of the nastiest rivalry.
00:16:42Will the ravens or steelers be left standing?

00:19:21>> The civil rights movement is everything we are standing on today, I think.
00:19:29And it's still not finished.
00:19:32He still gives us a dream to strive for and gotry to accomplish.
00:19:42He was a great example not only for african-americans but americans in general.
00:19:44For all of us to strive for rights, equality and justice.
00:19:55>>> The seahawks go for another improbable playoff win sunday in chicago.
00:19:59Seattle had trouble running the ball for much of the season but has rushed for 141 and 150 yards in the last two games.
00:20:07The bears lost to the seahawks in week six at soldier field as chicago went for 0-12 in third down conversions.
00:20:15Rachel nichols always in the coldest of climates.
00:20:17What do bears, julius peppers and the gang, what are they saying about what the defense has to do to beat the seahawks and get to the nfc championship game?
00:20:28>> They're saying they have to be more aggressive this time.
00:20:34>> Rob marinelli used that expression, you can't steal second with your foot on first.
00:20:38That's what he has been telling his guys this week.
00:20:40They're going to have to go after matt hasselbeck, more aggressive going after the rushers.
00:20:42There has been discussion this week about this sense of responsibility that this defensive unit has.
00:20:47Michael, you know they spent a lot of cash on this unit in the off-season.
00:20:49Keeping core guys, going out and getting a guy like julius peppers.
00:20:55And I asked, tommy harris, brian urlacher today, how much do you guys feel you have to go lead the team to a super bowl game now after everything they spent on you?
00:21:02>> We know that we have to.
00:21:04That is the biggest thing that we are focusing on.
00:21:12But when you keep core guys, pay a lot of guys a lot of money, it's a business also.
00:21:19You don't have that much time to play together.
00:21:20So we know that the window closes very fast.
00:21:21And we have to take advantage of our opportunities.
00:21:24>> Talent-wise, this defense is up there.
00:21:27Look at pat, lance, tommy.
00:21:29Our corners are good.
00:21:31Playing good at linebacker.
00:21:32We rotate a lot of guys.
00:21:32We are deep.
00:21:33Most places we are pretty deep.
00:21:37This is up there with one of the best defenses I've played on.
00:21:43Talent-wise and athletically we are up there.
00:21:47>> They talk about three phases of the game.
00:21:49On this team may be more so than other.
00:21:50Not just the defense and offense.
00:21:51But also the special teams when you talk about devon hester.
00:21:53Interesting, pete carroll said yesterday they're going to kick to him.
00:21:55They are going to punt to him.
00:21:56He said they can't afford not to.
00:21:57Devon and I have talked about that over the last couple weeks he says he understands.
00:22:05He says teams just give up too much field position if they kick out of bounds to kick away from him.
00:22:10That's really getting to be too much of a head start for bears' offense especially this time of year.
00:22:15That being said, when we talked to him today about what pete carroll said, he said, you know, now that I know I have the green light.
00:22:27So he is getting ready for it, guys.
00:22:28>> Rachel, they would rather give up field position.
00:22:29Six points, give up field position.
00:22:30Thank you much, rachel.
00:22:31>> Thanks.
00:22:31>> All right, divisional playoffs get under way saturday.

00:22:52>>> Baltimore hasn't gotten the better of big ben since christmas eve, 2006.
00:22:55How do the ravens contain roethlisberger and make the seventh time a charm.

00:25:38>>> >>> ravens and steelers meet saturday at heinz field.
00:25:45Each winning on the other's home turf.
00:25:48Fast forward to the fourth quarter.
00:25:49Ravens, 14-10.
00:25:53Joe flacco meets houshmandzadeh in the back of the end zone.
00:25:57Watch him keep the toes down.
00:25:57Ravens go on to win.
00:25:5917-14.
00:25:59And absent in the offense.
00:26:00His first big play of the season.
00:26:01Go back to week 13.
00:26:02Again, fast forward to the fourth quarter.
00:26:04All these games come down to the fourth quarter.
00:26:07Steelers down 10-6.
00:26:07Troy polamalu, makes his presence s known.
00:26:12Joe flacco forcing a fumble that would be recovered by lamar woodley.
00:26:18Steelers win 13-10.
00:26:20From hard-hitting defense to ground and pound philosophies, ravens/steelers are similar in so many respects.
00:26:24That can be seen in what they do on offense.
00:26:25Both teams rank near the top of the league this season.
00:26:27Their reliance on the running game.
00:26:28Both teams rarely beat themselves ranking near the top of the league in fewest turnovers.
00:26:37Eric, you spent the last two seasons having to deal with baltimore and pittsburgh twice a year.
00:26:42What's going to be the key to this ravens/steelers match-up?
00:26:45>> The most difficult thing about defending the steelers is big ben.
00:26:47And when he is able to generate those broken plays where he gets out of the pocket, usually broken plays lead to big plays.
00:26:53And their guys are better at the broken plays than you can practice for.
00:27:00There's so much of them a game where he generates something, their receivers adjust to it, get open and that leads to huge plays.
00:27:09He can make all the throws when he is moving around.
00:27:10They have got to be able to keep him in the pocket.
00:27:13I'd say on the flip side of that, in dealing with the steelers linebackers, baltimore will do a good job running the ball, getting some play action, and then being able to throw down the field with double moves or two-man routes on pittsburgh's corner.
00:27:30So I think big plays are going to shape this game.
00:27:32>> I agree with eric.
00:27:33There will be big plays involved in the game.
00:27:34A game when you think about it too.
00:27:35Besides the big plays.
00:27:37This is a game if you are a football player for the ravens or for the steelers, you're going to the equipment room and you're telling the equipment guy this is a two -- two chinstrap game.
00:27:49In other words you got to buckle it up.
00:27:50This is going to be a hard, physical football game.
00:27:52There is going to be some fur flying.
00:27:55Here's another thing, if you're timid, if you're a timid person and don't like violence, don't watch it.
00:28:00That's going to be this kind of game.
00:28:01Here again, the big plays, the steelers have in their possession, mike wallace.
00:28:05He's a guy that can run vertical and that can be a problem for the ravens.
00:28:09>> Yeah, absolutely can.
00:28:10Mike wallace one of the big play players, make things over the top.
00:28:17He is great at those things.
00:28:18You're right, herm.
00:28:19Feint of heart need not apply.
00:28:20Stand too close to the television you may come away with a bloody nose if you are watching close.
00:28:22He is one of the guys that makes it over the top.
00:28:29I'll tell you the other guy I'm looking at, the other match-up on the other side of the football, terrell suggs.
00:28:37I look at suggs.
00:28:38He is playing at such a high level.
00:28:39I am telling you he has a great match up.
00:28:40Because the offensive lean of the pittsburgh steelers, in particular the left tackle has struggled, it's one of those situations where if you are the ravens, you are like we have a great match-up.
00:28:58Third down and long.
00:28:59Now one thing to have a great match up.
00:29:00Another thing to beat your guy clean and get your hands on big ben, big ben.
00:29:01And then bring him down to the ground.
00:29:03Six foot, 275.
00:29:03He is huge.
00:29:05>> That is the problem.
00:29:06Can you tackle big ben?
00:29:06Always the problem with ben.
00:29:07You know that.
00:29:14You faced him, I faced him.
00:29:20You feel look you are sitting on the side.
00:29:21We got it.
00:29:21Oh, no we don't.
00:29:22Throws one down the rail.
00:29:23He beats you.
00:29:24>> A lot of times we talk about the quarterbacks.
00:29:25Both guys will have a big impact.
00:29:27Other side.
00:29:28Quarterback.
00:29:29Defense.
00:29:29Troy polamalu, they put their stamp on the game as well.
00:29:31How do you neutralize the big play safeties as an offense?
00:29:33>> It is hard to do.
00:29:34Colt learned that.
00:29:34Did a great job through the course of the season.
00:29:36He hadn't faced troy or ed in the first to times we played them.
00:29:41The first time he played them.
00:29:42And their ability, their instincts are amazing.
00:29:48I had rodney harrison, and there were times I was coaching him to be in a certain spot.
00:29:54He would be some where es.
00:29:55I said rodney what are you doing?
