00:00:32When we have a vote, when they have a vote and elect new leadership in egypt, it's not a process that closes off the people to have the kind of freedoms they've been arguing for.
00:00:50>> Nobody saw this coming in egypt.
00:00:53We kind of guessed tunisia, that would unravel, but egypt came out of nowhere, really.
00:00:58Were you shocked?
00:00:59What do you think's going to happen now?
00:01:03It seems to me mubarak can say what he like, but the people are marching and they want him gone now.
00:01:09 ben ali was removed in tunisia, there was the general alert that there was going to be reaction and people taking to the streets saying, we want freedom too, we want our voices to be heard.
00:01:28And we shouldn't be too surprised that something like this would happen in egypt.
00:01:33But the scale of it probably surprised a lot of folks.
00:01:38I think the administration in their earliest comments were caught a bit off guard.
00:01:45>> If you'd been asked as vice president biden was asked, is he a dictator, what would you have said?
00:01:51>> I'm not in the vice president's shoes, so I'm not going to -- >> let me ask you as governor romney, is he a dictator?
00:01:56>> He's the leader of his country, he's a monarch-type figure -- >> lots of monarchs have been dictators.
00:02:06>> I would avoid the word "dictator," but the country has not had the kind of economic and litical freedom that they aspire to.
00:02:15And that's something i understand.
00:02:19Over many administrations in this country, we've encouraged president mubarak to move in the direction of providing these freedoms and it's going to happen.
00:02:26>> President mubarak has persistent refused to do that.
00:02:29That's precisely why he's in the hole he's in now.
00:02:32And you have this mass populous and they're all saying, hang on a second, america is still supporting this guy, allowing him to have his six, seven months of handover, whatever it wants to be.
00:02:44They don't want that.
00:02:45They want this guy gone.
00:02:46They see him as a dictator and they want someone in america to actually stand up for them, don't they?
00:02:53>> They want to know that the america people stand with the voices of freedom and democracy, and we do.
00:02:59We also want to see in our country a willingness to support a process that leads to a permanent democracy, not something that can be kidnap as the islamists.
00:03:07But the transition process will look like -- I don't know, maybe the military will decide to take a more active role.
00:03:15Maybe president mubarak can convince opposition leaders that he can move the nation to a permanent status of democracy.
00:03:23But we don't want to have the country just fall into anarchy and to have a setting where it's available for the most extreme elements and the most violent elements to take control pop >> how could this affect american foreign policy going forward, in the sense that it may be now very antiquated for america to continue supporting and propping up people who run these country who are perceived by their people to be dictators.
00:03:46That game may be over, however helpful and supportive people like mubarak have been to america, which he undisputably has been, hasn't that game run its course?
00:03:57>> There's always been a conflict and a balance, one being that we support values and principles they are consistent with our own.
00:04:09At the same time, we have an interest in our national security.
00:04:13And if a nation is headed by a monarch or headed by another leader whose form of government we don't particularly appreciate or approve of, we don't come in and say, we won't work with you, we won't negotiate with you, we won't sign a peace agreement with you.
00:04:26This, after all, has been an administration that has been friendly with us and has agreements with us to protect our ally.
00:04:34So we can't say we're going to rip everything apart and fashion your nation the way we would like to be.
00:04:41But we're not going to go around the world and change every government to fashion it after our always and in some cases we'll be dealing with representatives who are less than the representatives we would like to have.
00:04:53But in each case, we need to let them know that we stand for freedom and to have a government that will be stable.
00:05:00>> You've just been in the region.
00:05:04What was your take on -- obviously, this is before what happened in egypt, so it's with hindsight, but what was your take on what was going on there when you were there?
00:05:13>> It was just a few weeks ago and the sentiment there and the perception at that time was dramatically different.
00:05:19I spent most of my time in afghanistan and israel, but i did meet with king abdullah in jordan.
00:05:24And at that point the concerns we addressed were concerns o the economy and how to get people working again and improve the lots of the people in his nation.
00:05:32But the thoughts of a potential change in his government as he has announced today, I believe, those are not things even being considered at that point.
00:05:40>> Were you surprised?
00:05:41>> Well, what happened in tunisia is having a seismic effect on what's happening throughout the middle east.
00:05:47Not surprised by his decision to make a change.
00:05:50>>> When we come back, governor romney.
00:05:52I'm going to put you on the spot and not ask you if you're going to run for the presidency, but when.
00:09:50>>> Come now, I'm going to put this to you straight.
00:09:52Yes or no, are you going to run for the presidency again?
00:09:54>> I don't have an answer for you yet, because there are a lot of things you have to consider before you make that final decision.
00:09:59Clearly, I'm doing the things like other folks are doing to keep the option open and moving forward in the event that I make a positive decision, but there are matters of health, of support, of the kind of network you'd like to have of individuals behind you.
00:10:11Those are things you've got to assess before you make a final decision.
00:10:15>> Am I right in thinking you know the answer, you just don't want to give it to me yet?
00:10:19>> No, I don't have a 100% answer ready to go.
00:10:22My wife think I should run.
00:10:23She's absolutely committed.
00:10:24She's saying, you've got to run, you've got to have somebody who understands the economy, she's ready for me to run.
00:10:36>> Are your chances, do you think, advanced in a positive way by the existence of sarah palin, that she's such a polarizing figure, the whole tea party machine, depending on who you talk to the in the republican party, half the people like it, half the people think it could cost you the next election.
00:10:55Is you and your position now emerge as the savior, if you like, of all this polarizing?
00:10:59>> You know, I'm not somebody who can analyze for you the politics.
00:11:03>> Yes, you are.
00:11:05You're the perfect person.
00:11:06>> I'm not a pundit, I'm not a pollster.
00:11:08>> You're a politician.
00:11:09>> I spent four years in the governor's chair, and it was a terrific position, but I spent almost 25 years of my life in the public sector.
00:11:18So in terms of being an analyst of the political to and fro, I'm not the right guy to talk to.
00:11:21But I can tell you what i believe.
00:11:25>> What do you believe about sarah palin?
00:11:28>> I believe she's an extraordinarily powerful and effective voice in our party, that she has generated a great deal of support and attention, she'd be great in a primary process, she'd bring attention to the process.
00:11:39And frankly, the more people we have on the stage in those debates, talking about different ideas and different approaches, the better.
00:11:44>> Could you beat her?
00:11:45>> I don't know the answer to that.
00:11:48>> Does your wife know the answer tthat?
00:11:50>> She probably does.
00:11:51>> She thinks you can beat everyone, doesn't she >> I'm not sure whether she knows if I can win or lose, but she knows that someone of my experience is needed in the country at a time like this.
00:12:01>> Never mind what you think, because she's fascinating here, why does your wife think you lost last time?
00:12:08>> That's a darned good question.
00:12:11I cannot read her mind on all dimensions, but we talk about -- >> she must have sat you down and say, here's where you went wrong.
00:12:18>> She would say, and I would SAY, THAT john McCain ran a very good campaign, and the most important thing in the country WAS IRAQ, AND john McCain was an indisputed expert on iraq, and that was in his favor.
00:12:36And I spent a lot of time talking about issues that were not central to the reason I was running.
00:12:41But even if I had been the NOMINEE INSTEAD OF john McCain, I probably would have lost to barack obama too.
00:12:47>> You're a bit older now, a bit wiser.
00:12:50You know, when I study you as a potential candidate, you tick all the boxes, harvard mba, very hardworking, very rich, decent guy, religiously devout and a smart business guy.
00:13:03If I was a voter, you're there.
00:13:04There's no problem with you.
00:13:06I mean, you don't drink, you don't -- never taken drugs, you don't smoke, you're a family man.
00:13:12I mean, you're pretty perfect, aren't you?
00:13:14>> Well, I think people would -- particularly my family, would disagree with that conclusion.
00:13:18>> I want to play you a clip now, and it relates to your mormon faith and I want you to watch this and we'll discuss it after.
00:13:24>> Sure.
00:13:26>> I believe in my mormon faith and I endeavor to live by it.
00:13:30My faith is the faith of my fathers.
00:13:32I'll be true to them and to my beliefs.
00:13:36Some believe that such a confession of my faith will sink my candidacy.
00:13:40If they're right, so be it.
00:13:44>> Do you still stand by every word of that?
00:13:46>> Absolutely.
00:13:47>> Do you think it's going to be a potential problem if you run, your faith?
00:13:51>> Once again, I can't judge the politics.
00:13:54I don't know the answer to that.
00:13:55My experience, so far, both in massachusetts, running as a mormon guy in a state that's overwhelmingly of other faiths didn't seem to get in my way there.
00:14:05But most people in this country recognize that, in fact, the nation itself was founded on the principle of religious tolerance and freedom.
00:14:14We respect other people's beliefs and I think in a lot of cases respect people who honor their faith and try to be true to them.
00:14:20>> Finally, you're known in some circles in washington as mr.
00:14:23Flip-flop, which I thought was something to do with beaches, but apparently it means that you've had a little tendency to move with the sand a little on issues.
00:14:34How do you respond to that charge?
00:14:36>> Well, a lot of things are charged in politics, some accurate, some not.
00:14:39And the nice thing about writing a book, like I did a year ago, i lay out a pretty clear vision of what I would do on the major issues that the country faces.
00:14:48And if anyone wants to know where I stand on virtually any major issue of the time, they can look at that book and say, oh, that's where he is.
00:14:57And you're going to see me talking day in, day out, whether I'm a candidate or not a candidate, about the things i think america has to do to remain the exceptional leader in the world, to protect freedom here, to get the economy going again, to create jobs.
00:15:10People in america want to know who can get 15 million people back to work.
00:15:14>> If you were president right now, what's the one thing you'd change right now?
00:15:17Most important thing to you?
00:15:19>> I would reverse all of the policies that have made america one of the least friendly places to start new businesses and to grow business.
00:15:28We have made it hard to create jobs, hard for entrepreneurs, hard for small business.
00:15:33And this administration, while saying they hope to make things business friendly, have done just the opposite.
00:15:38Make america the most attractive place for entrepreneurs, innovators, creators, people who want to work hard, labor, that's what we've got to do to make america strong again.
00:15:46>> Governor romney, thank, and can you come back when you've got a bit more to say about your decision.
00:15:51>> Absolutely.
00:15:52>> And more importantly, bring mrs. romney as well.
00:15:55>> Nice to meet you.
