00:07:00Rodriguez playing with wilkes-barr pembings.
00:07:05He could return to the yankees as early as monday, could be tuesday, and he was 2-4 as the designated hitter friday night.
00:07:12 last time the open championship was played at muirfield, a mid round storm blew in off the north atlantic and about tore the field to shreds on saturday and you would think those competing this week would welcome sunny skies.
00:07:28 you would think but as much sun can wreak havoc.
00:07:33Welcome to the championship.
00:07:36Scott van pelt with our coverage.
00:07:39>> Here on the eastern coast of scotland, in east lothiam where the links courses reside, it was a sunny, scottish day.
00:07:42As folks were puttering around town tending to their business whether they were golf fans or not, never would they have dreamed that would unfold on the golf course.
00:07:48Early on it was calm and quiet.
00:07:52The flags in scotland were largely limp and the course had taken on water overnight and they'd softened the edge of the green if you like and the green in the wrong accent raised its head and seemed to say you talking to me?
00:08:04The open championship in all its fury was in evidence.
00:08:09The code word was carnage.
00:08:10With andy north, I'm scott van pelt and we'll talk about the greens and whether they were reasonable.
00:08:15But you've been talking about all week how the wind would totally turn around from the ection.
00:08:20What role did that play in what we saw friday?
00:08:23>> So many players had never seen the golf course in that situation.
00:08:26A great example, 14 and 15 thursday.
00:08:30You could actually stop your ball on the green even though they played very long into the wind.
00:08:34Now on friday with the downwind, you had absolutely no chance of stopping on either green no matter what club you hit in there.
00:08:41>> You know what you needed?
00:08:43A ponytail and cigar and experience.
00:08:46Angel jimenez has all three.
00:08:48He tells tom rinaldi you must enjoy your life.
00:08:53He does.
00:08:54You must also enjoy links golf and he's gotten off to a great start.
00:08:58What's the key on this shot?
00:09:02>> It's early in the day and the green has a lot of moisture and the green has spin on it.
00:09:07You don't see spin the rest of the day.
00:09:08It was an easy birdie.
00:09:11>> When he has had birdie opportunities like he has on 11, he capitalizes to four under par.
00:09:16You mentioned 15.
00:09:18He hit a good shot so why do we see him playing beyond the green?
00:09:28>> By the time he'd got be to the 15th the golf course dries out and hits one that literally runs 40 yards through the green but makes a great up and in.
00:09:34>> That is what you might call proper links golf, a proper play.
00:09:38He stays three under on the par 318th.
00:09:41Is he a little lucky here?
00:09:42Because the sand is soft and he pops it out of there, it will release and saves par.
00:09:45A great round of golf.
00:09:48>> We wouldn't have imagined when he turned in his round of three under par he would lead on his own.
00:09:55And we wouldn't believe it would be the first time he's ever led through 36 in a major given how familiar we are with jimenez at 49 years old, a fixture in ryder cup in his 61st major and a guy who made a stack of cash playing all around the world but that's the case.
00:10:05He sets the pace incidentally, all male.
00:10:09He's a man!
00:10:10Tiger woods on the third hole.
00:10:13Re walking with this group.
00:10:15What's the key to this shot?
00:10:20Tiger is playing back into the wind, back into the wind with a 7-iron.
00:10:24The ball hits and releases 10 or 12 feet.
00:10:26Beautiful play.
00:10:27He knocked that putt in for birdie.
00:10:30That's the good.
00:10:32>> We saw some of the bad here.
00:10:37Is there any common thread to putts like this that went begging?
00:10:42>> Unfortunately that one he just pulled.
00:10:44He said afterwards it was not a good putt.
00:10:47That was a three-putt.
00:10:48>> He gets a shot back on the par 5.
00:10:50Never comfortable for this putt for par.
00:10:52>> He looked at that putt 18 different or a long time and never was comfortable.
00:10:55When a player is not comfortable, there's a good chance he's not knocking it in.
00:10:58>> Did he get fooled on this approach on 11?
00:11:01>> He is trying to hit it into the wind.
00:11:04You can't come up over the green.
00:11:05Omes up well short and from there he tries to pitch the ball instead of putting it.
00:11:12The speed had been bad but the putter was bad.
00:11:17He pitched by 12 feet and misses that and leads to a bogey.
00:11:20>> Now he's one under for the championship but did grind out some good par putts to keep himself hanging around, coming around and comes to the 18th where birdies were tough to come by but this is as good a shot he struck in the >> a 5-iron from well over 200 yards.
00:11:35Fabulous play from well on the front of the green and hits it softly and he sets up a great birdie chance.
00:11:38>> The second day in a row, thursday was a put for par and very satisfying and here's a putt for birdie and tiger woods, draining it.
00:11:44>> It was difficult out there today.
00:11:45Obviously a complete different direction than yesterday.
00:11:48On top of that, we've had quite a bit of moisture on the greens overnight.
00:11:51We actually made a couple ball marks early.
00:11:53And it obviously changed a lot as we were playing along.
00:11:57Our last four holes, the last five holes it got off quick.
00:12:04But one thing jean and I were talking about today, we never got to putt to the hole.
00:12:12We were struggling with that and so much slower than they were yesterday.
00:12:17But you hit it coming down the hills, they're running out still.
00:12:23>> Andy, I know you felt like the reaction and the momentum is positive as he tries to take that into the weekend.
00:12:28Why hasn't he been the same guy on the weekend as he's been the first couple rounds?
00:12:32>> You know, scotty, if I knew the answer to that I could have told tiger and made a lot of cash.
00:12:39I think sometimes he puts so much pressure on himself to play well.
00:12:42He tried too hard.
00:12:43There's a fine line between not caring and trying really hard in this game.
00:12:46And when you can run down that line in between, you can really play well.
00:12:53>> Tiger woods at two under.
00:12:55He's got company.
00:12:56Let's show you three other players who haven't gotten there.
00:12:59Dustin johnson.
00:13:03>> Dustin johnson played exceptionally well in the open championship.
00:13:07There's a player that can absolutely roast it.
00:13:12>> He told tom rinaldi afterwards, this is the best 3-wood he ever hit in his life.
00:13:18He cashed it in and made eagle three and moves to three under.
00:13:22Par 5 9th and with his mammoth length can take advantage.
00:13:26He said this was a bad second but obviously a good third.
00:13:28>> It was a good third but still left himself in a position he's putting straight down the hill with wind blowing hard right to left.
00:13:33That was a very difficult putt but he did knock it in.
00:13:36>> He's two under for the tournament.
00:13:39Henrik stenson, feels like a lifetime ago, won the players championship, was a top 10 player and really fell off form but here -- excuse me.
00:13:45>> Thought it was going in.
00:13:50>> Very nearly holes out and moves to two under after dropping a shot on 10 and the par 4 11th.
00:13:56>> This a player that can hit it hard.
00:13:58In the wind it is helpful for a guy to hit it a long way and he can hit some long irons off the tees.
00:14:04>> Stenson with a resurgent career and what's gone down and way back.
00:14:09He had the round just cooking, makes a birdie on 8 and one on 9, the par 4 12th.
00:14:12This is impossible to do.
00:14:14>> He got as much as six under par at one point in time for the day.
00:14:17And then unfortunately, struggled a bit at the ends, also.
00:14:21But that is a beautiful play.
00:14:22That ball.
00:14:24>> Unbelievable.
00:14:25Jimenez on his own and then westwood, stenson, woods and johnson.
00:14:28We'll show you highlights a little later of some others.
00:14:32It's worth pointing out how classy is this leader board?
00:14:34You have within four shots of the lead 19 players.
00:14:37Nine of them, nine of them have won him major championships.
00:14:45>> You know, I was figuring around somewhere level par today and would get me right in the tournament at one over and six under through 12 is a pretty good going.
00:14:50This golf course bit me a little bit in the end there but was playing tough, the last few holes it really started to dry out.
00:15:00>> It's running out 10 to 20 yards further than it was in the practice rounds.
00:15:03You've got to equate that in, coming downwind, you know, i hit a 4-iron into like a 316 bunker up against the face, so going in there pretty hot.
00:15:10And I didn't even think it was going to get to that bunker.
00:15:16>> Westwood drove it in the bunker, drove it off the tee into a bunker that was 400 yards.
00:15:20You see the different major champions.
00:15:25This is just a representation of who I'm talking about, woods, zach johnson, the masters champ, o'meara, a masters champ, web simpson, the open, bubba the masters and phil the masters.
00:15:38These are players you know and if you paid attention this week, shoe have known to expect this would be a class type player given the history this golf course has shown.
00:15:44What stands out to you about that group?
00:15:47>> First of all, there's a lot of good players here but i think we're set up for an unbelievable weekend.
00:16:14We've got a golf course playing firm, fast, it's really testing the players, not only their physical skills but their mental skills.
00:16:20I think we're set up for an unbelievable finish.
00:16:23>> Tom rinaldi tells us when these class players, these great players are finished, they were just happy it was done.
00:16:30They were thrilled to sit down so they didn't have to be tortured anymore by the golf course.
00:16:37How difficult was it?
00:16:39When we come back later on "sportscenter," some examples of why the highlights we just showed you didn't include some other players like a cabrera who led on his own for a while, a snedeker who led for a while, zach johnson who led from the back nine on his own.
00:16:58And phil mickelson, a pretty dodgey three-putt and still had a nice day and a chance.
00:17:12 with dwight howard bolting for houston and kobe recovering from injury, coot lakers' championship window be closing?
