00:01:14>>> Day of reckoning.
00:01:17Protesters surged into tahrir square.
00:01:20Will they march to the presidential palace today to take mubarak out?
00:01:25We'll be live in cairo.
00:01:26 want in a post mubarak egypt and what will it get?
00:01:33And numbers just in.
00:01:34A big drop in the unemployment rate.
00:01:38Down to 9%, but the economy actually added fewer jobs than it has in the last four months.
00:01:42Another perplexing jobs report.
00:01:44Good morning, everyone.
00:01:45IT'S FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 4th, 2011.
00:01:48>> Huge weather impact appears on to be the jobs report.
00:01:5200 in cairo, where tens of thousands of people have filled liberation square for what they're calling president mubarak's day of departure.
00:02:02These are almost all antigovernment protesters.
00:02:07Some pro mubarak supporters have been seen nearby, but there's been no violence so far.
00:02:12The white house stepping up talks with egyptian officials about forming some sort of a caretaker government once mubarak is gone.
00:02:21Mubarak said last night, he is fed up being president, but has no intention of leaving before september.
00:02:29They have brought in tanks and razor wire.
00:02:37Admiral mullen says american officials are in close contact urging the egyptian army to keep the peace.
00:02:43>> Discussions I've had, they have reassured me they have no intent to fire on their on people.
00:02:52From yesterday, it's an evolving situation that we hope just can continue to evolve peacefully so the egyptian people can end up with the government that they want.
00:03:07>> This has been among the single most contact that has done and most frequently.
00:03:11>> Well, the ties are there.
00:03:13It's clear and have been clear is ing that the military will be able to revolve this crisis or oversee this orderly transition.
00:03:25Two dozen journalists have been detained over the last day or so as a result of that media crackdown.
00:03:33A watchdog group said they have herd heard of 20 or more incidents where they have been attacked.
00:03:45Al jazeera says the website has been attacked by hackers.
00:03:52Ron, good morning.
00:03:52Tell us what you can.
00:03:55>> Good morning to you.
00:03:57Yes, we're driving through cairo if I have to put the phone down, it's because we may have come to a check point or something.
00:04:06Yes, we are being very careful about how we work here and trying get to, from areas we want to see and report about.
00:04:14There hasn't been the violence today that there was yesterday.
00:04:22The atmosphere in the square is completely different than yesterday certainly.
00:04:26The military is playing a much more prominent role now and clearly trying to organize the protests and not being confrontational with the antigovernment protesters, but it's a very tense situation because any, anything can perhaps set off or ignite some kind of confrontation.
00:04:48It's a very dense place.
00:04:51Driving around the city when you pass the check points, for example, there are some manned by police and some -- and seemingly in charge or being allowed to exert their will as they try to defend their neighborhoods or just take charge of the situation.
00:05:08So, a good day in the square would appear based on what I'm hearing, I can tell you I don't have an eyewitness account of that at the moment, but beyond there, and it's still a very volatile place.
00:05:22Still difficult to move around.
00:05:24A place where ordinary people are really suffering.
00:05:26We talked to people in neighborhoods, shopping malls, doors are closed.
00:05:31People are talking about how difficult it is to get cash.
00:05:35Basic essentials in some areas.
00:05:37We've seen fuel lines have stretched for 20 or 30 cars.
00:05:41And things of that nature, so it's a difficult place for people, difficult place for us.
00:05:52But the story is not about the journalists, it's about standing up to the government.
00:05:58The government appears to be defiant and trying to make gestures to appease divide and the opposition and stay in power.
00:06:04>> Ron, there have been some talk that today would be a day they'd march on one of the presidential palaces or perhaps in cairo.
00:06:13Have you heard anything, seen anything?
00:06:17Is there even more security surrounding where mubarak is residing than there has been earlier this week?
00:06:22>> Marching to the palaces or beyond the square as a practical matter is not going happen, i don't think.
00:06:30Lodgistically, we're taking quite a distance.
00:06:32A distance that would require the marchers to go through the city, down a number of streets and at this point, it appears that the army has the demonstrators contained.
00:06:42Everyone who is approaching the square is being searched.
00:06:45Some are being turned away and diverted.
00:06:49So, it doesn't appear to be a situation where people could move freely.
00:06:53If they did that, it would, i think, be seen as provocative and the military might aggressively try to stop that from happening.
00:07:05At this point, the marnlers are confined to the square.
00:07:08Again, it appears as i understand, to be orderly, which is a good thing all around because violence is not going to help either side.
00:07:18You would not think, but again, the government seems to have the military in particular seem to have things under control for now, but things here change rapidly.
00:07:26>> And they do, indeed.
00:07:29Ron allen inairo.
00:07:35>> This morning, spum leaders says it supports those supporting the egyptian government and called for an islamic state to take its place.
00:07:43That talk is adding to growing an site.
00:07:50Egyptyria and jordan are now facing political upheaval.
00:07:56What are we hearing from the israeli government?
00:08:02I've heard some undiplomatic language about how scared they are about what's going on.
00:08:08What do we hear today?
00:08:09>> Reporter: Definitely.
00:08:11In many cases, the israeli public was waiting to hear that, kind of to give voice to the fear that is they have.
00:08:17We hear a lot of this prediction, too, that syria is going to be the next egypt.
00:08:21That egypt is going to become the next iran and this week, benjamin netanyahu told parliament he's worried egypt is going to become the next gaza.
00:08:31So you kind of see this web of tension there.
00:08:33You mentioned that iran has weighed in in favor of the antigovernment movement there, the protesters and saying that this is inevitably going to lead to a more islamic middle east.
00:08:44You know, hamas told us the exact same thing this week.
00:08:48They said no matter what, the new government of egypt is going to allow for a more significant role of groups like the muslim brotherhood and that is going to unify the middle east.
00:08:59They feel that part of that unification is going to be against peace with israel and or european influence in the region.
00:09:08They also felt that the new government there is going to be a political backing for hamas in gaza and that would force israel eventually to make the situation better for the palestinian people.
00:09:21So not exactly great groundwork for talk of peace or further agreements.
00:09:28>> Michelle kosinski in tel aviv watching the story.
00:09:30Thank you.
00:09:31Other big story we're following today, the labor department just out with the first jobs report of 2011 and in it, the unemployment rate fell sharply to 9.5%.
00:09:43Is isn't all good news.
00:09:45In fact, the numbers out this morning show a net gain of just 36,000 nonfarm payrolls in january.
00:09:52The fewest in four months.
00:09:55Far from being enough to keep up with population growth.
00:09:58Far lower than most estimates were.
00:10:01The household survey also shows 8 million americans have left the workforce.
00:10:08One of those perplexing jobs reports where they seems to be good news.
00:10:13Behind the numbers, it's not all good.
00:10:15>> By the way, the math on this is quite frustrating because you hear it's going to take 250,000 jobs to lower the unemployment rate.
00:10:26There's always odd math going on.
00:10:27>> Part of it is because the way they calculate the unemployment rate, it's who is looking for work and sometimes a lower unemployment rate actually reflects people giving up.
00:10:38>> Shouldn't be predicting.
00:10:40It's a very tough number to calculate.
00:10:43>>> Coming up, we're going to return live to cairo on a day that may be a turning point if the country and region.
00:10:52President mubarak now says he can't step down until september, but the protesters aren't going anywhere either.
00:10:57After 11 days of unrest, what will today hold?
00:11:00>> Plus, a new campaign of intimidation in egypt.
00:11:04The crackdown on journalists ahead.
00:11:08But first, a look at the president's schedule.

00:15:35Obviously, the mubarak forces decided to back off.
00:15:36Is this the army taking a bigger role here and almost pushing back?
00:15:41>> It was interesting that the minister of defense was there to examine the situation.
00:15:46We heard report there is concern within the ruling class of the regime, that the army intervene, they would be a reaction on the part of the national guard, which is under the control of mubarak.
00:16:03So I think people in the army are trying avoid bloodshed.
00:16:09Before they can ease mubarak out.
00:16:13I would argue there people in the united states who will not -- whose days are numbered in the eyes of many egyptians.
00:16:29So, you have this international pressure.
00:16:32Probably the make up of a deal are there.
00:16:34I'm not sure if as an interim leader would be acceptable to a lot of people, but if you bring in other personalities, judges, I think the egyptian society is full of people who can supervise this massive transition and prepare the states for elections, create space where you have parties competing to prevent the emergence of islamists and the brotherhood as the main political party in egypt.
00:17:09>> If you just take a step back and look at what's happened over the last 11 days or so, there's remarkable inconsistency, one day, it's the goon squad they call them.
00:17:25Then you have a day where they're going after journalists.
00:17:28Then one day of calm.
00:17:31What do you make of that?
00:17:32>> It looks like there are more than one center of power.
00:17:36You have the goons terrorizing eem in the streets including journalists then you have the prime minister apologizing and asking for investigation.
00:17:49Denounced yesterday -- which is conspiracy.
00:17:56The army did not fire a shot against them, so you have this kind of built-in tension within the ruling group and there will be officers who think about their own future.
00:18:07Who think about their own perks.
00:18:09Who think that the relationship with the united states.
00:18:11This is not iran 2009.

00:18:51Is it moussa?
00:18:54>> I saw moussa in davos.
00:19:04And maybe he should be the next president of egypt.

00:33:21>> Yes, yesterday, there was really -- it did not look good at the beginning.
00:33:28And it was an atmosphere of intimidation of journalists all over.
00:33:33Today, it was really jubilant and celebrate.

00:34:36None of that appears to be happening today?

00:34:43There was so much optimism i sensed in the square that i think a lot of people just wanted to ride that out.
00:34:51It had demonstrated so much commitment for the people there that that was good enough for now.

00:35:03>>> Let's move on to the jobs report.
00:35:05There's a little bit of a conflicting number from the labor department on jobs.
00:35:10>> The unemployment rate is down to 9%, but job creation came nearly to a halt in january.
00:35:15The economy added only 36,000 nonfarm jobs.
00:35:22Here to explain, mark zandi, steve liesman.
00:35:27I know you've got a couple other things you might have to jump off to.
00:35:32The private payroll says one thing this week.
00:35:35Seemed like it was going to be a good number, then the government data, seems like we get this every e every month.
00:35:41>> I was hoping you were going to start with mark so I could listen to what he had to say.
00:35:47What did that guy say in airplane, he picked the wrong day to stop whatever he was doyne.
00:35:50There's a lot of conflicting data here.
00:35:53On balance, there's a really nasty top line number, that really meager gain in jobs.
00:35:59Just 36,000 for an economy that should be creating 150, 200,000 a month.
00:36:07But inside, you have that huge unemployment rate and a nice increase in average hourly earnings, so people who are 4% more on the month.
00:36:17That's a good number.
00:36:18And also, outside of what can be sort of weatd industries, we did see some decent job gain.
00:36:29One of the things that could be explaining this, lousy weather in places that don't normally get it and so, it can't be adjusted for in the data.
00:36:40>> All right, well now let's test it out with mark zandi.
00:36:45What's your take on it?
00:36:46Do you think it's weather related?
00:36:47>> Well, I'm so glad you started with steve.
00:36:51Got it right.
00:36:52Yeah, I do.
00:36:53Yeah, I think weather is all over this report.
00:36:55We saw big declines in construction.
00:36:59Big declines in transportation.
00:37:00Big declines in leisure and hospitality.
00:37:07The weather's always bad in january, but this was a really bad january.
00:37:12About as bad as it gets in terms of storms and how cold it was.
00:37:18If you pull back and abstract from the weather affects, i think underlying job growth is probably somewhere, 125, 150,000 per month.
00:37:29That's the number of jobs we need just to maintain the stable rate of unemployment.
00:37:38That's progress compared to where we are a year or two ago.
00:37:41We need to see businesses step up.
00:37:43>> Let me follow up with you on that.
00:37:45Sometimes, we see this number drop because of previous months numbers being adjusted.
00:37:52How much adjustment was there in the last quarter?
00:37:54>> Well, there was a lot of adjustment, there was some positive revisions to the data, so in the month of december and november, the jobs gains were actually a little bit better than anticipated.
00:38:09If you throw that into the mix, it makes the numbers look a little better.
00:38:1625 million private sector jobs since the bottom of employment last spring.
00:38:22That's just barely enough to keep the unemployment rate where it is.
00:38:26I think american businesses are doing a lot better.
00:38:30Profits are up.
00:38:30I talked to a lot of business people.
00:38:32They're feeling better.
00:38:36Sentiment is stronger.
00:38:37I think by the spring, summer, we should be getting some improved job numbers and at that point, unemployment will be mover lower in a definitive way.
00:38:46>> Steve liesman, what do you make of this in light of what bernanke says?
00:38:52You can't really say is recovery is truly established until you see these jobs figures get better.
00:38:59>> Was that for steve or me?
00:39:00>> I think we lost steve's mike.
00:39:04Mark, you can have that one.
00:39:06I think we lost steve.
00:39:07>> Well, you know, I think chairman bernanke is being cautious.
00:39:13He is still engaged in a zero interest rate policy.
00:39:16He's engaged in what's known as quantitative easing, so he needs to be cautious to explain why he's been so aggressive.
00:39:25I think it's appropriate that he is.
00:39:27But if you listen to sort of the tone of his speech yesterday, it was more positive and I think he's also beginning to feel better about the economy's prospects.
00:39:41January was a tough month to read anything because of weather.
00:39:42I think by the spring, we'll get numbers that will give us a better sense of what's going on.

00:47:18On our clock, they're moving about as slowly as one can imagine and they continue to put forth plans that show this is the mubarak team that's been promoted in the past and that the public in the streets doesn't see any real change, so what's really in dispute is the clock and I also think that mubarak himself thinks that he is ak wii esing to what the west asked him to do and I think you really see it play lesson in selective perception.
