after being warned that the

their homes and possessions were
destroyed.

money into the area to help
banks and financial institutions

power tonight, without water,
without food.

freezing in the quake area.

living in shelters as thousands
have been evacuated because of
the nuclear danger.

power plants were damaged by the
quake.

this evening.

explosions at that plant.

| 00:02:47 | More than 1500 people have been
scanned for radiation exposure.

| 00:02:53 | Almost 200 have been found to be
somewhat contaminated.

military personnel involved in
relief efforts.

contamination is low level and
can be scrubbed off.

carrier, has been ordered to
leave its position downwind from
the nuclear plants.

dealing with the nuke meltdown.

situation is going to be.

hardest not to have that plant
meltdown so massive radiation
goes into the air.

understand we have plants like
those in trouble in japan.

|

| 00:04:49 | Most of the nuclear plants in
the united states are in the
eastern part of the united
states.

california that are in very
active seismic zones.

earthquake.

in an active seismic vons, there
nuclear

could -- these plants in the
could survive a terrorist
attack or a calamity of nature
that -- like we are seeing in
japan?

hudson river as a navigational
tool on their way to downtown
manhattan.

that plant hudson would it
withstand.

that the domes are thick and
quite fortified there are also
spent fuel rod pools on the
side.

reactor core and goes into pools
that fuel also needs to be kept
cool.

fuel.
|

terrorist attack or intrusion
nature could have somewhat the
effect.

impossible.

took a long time for the health
problems to develop in some

the radioactive cloud spread
according to wind current,
according to where the wind
precipitation was.

where everything stops it goes

over the northern hemisphere
after chernobyl.

japan, it's not going to be
confined to tokyo.

which, of course, it isn't yet.

authorities saying japan's low
level rationation has leaked
out.

chernobyl area was affected by
this, right?

who died from acute radiation
exposure and tens of millions

years down the line was thyroid
cancer.

result is going to be.

first.

experts and you say.

principle political consequence
of this horrible calamity that
has struck the japanese nation
is to retard the nuclear plants
and some
other countries more depend dent
principally germany.

its power from nuclear.
|
| 00:12:31 | Already you are hearing comments
from all over the place in
germany that they should go no
further with this.

| 00:12:35 | That the old reactors are going
to need to be -- need -- whose
life has been extended need to
be looked at.

| 00:12:42 | My sense is that the rebirth in
nuclear power in this country
which has been on hold for
almost a quarter of a century
because principally at chernobyl
but also three mile island
although no one, no one has ever
found to have been made sick by
3-mile island.

disaster at the nuclear
facilities is likely to destroy
those plants' effectiveness.

mile island than chernobyl.

though, look, to be realistic,
we are not going to get away
from foreign oil unless we get
an expansion of nuclear power.

| 00:13:20 | >> Bill: Alternative fuels are
not going to be ready for
decades on a mass level.

plant here in new york, all
these things are not built to
withstand a slament like a 9 on
a ricter scale earthquake.

don't want them.

|

have a significant number of
people who think we can't
tolerate these plants even if
they are working because of the
difficulty in exposing of the
spent fuel.

nevada which has been so.

|
| 00:14:04 | >> It's been resisted although
it appears from all we know
about it to be pretty safe.

| 00:14:09 | There is already recess tabs to
nuclear power in the united
states.

| 00:14:12 | It's likely to be intensified.
|
| 00:14:13 | When they talk about
withstanding an earthquake.

| 00:14:20 | You mean continue function
properly or have some kind of a
meltdown that would lead to some
massive public health emergency?

health emergency in japan.

| 00:14:30 | What we are going to have is a
loss of though the plants which
will be a significant blow of
the recovery from the japanese
unmanageable calamity.

control.
|

mean you get great plumes of
radioactive material in the
atmosphere.

the thing has melted down.

are going to have a massive
escape of radiation into the
atmosphere.

|
| 00:15:10 | >> There is a lot of things that
could happen.

| 00:15:12 | The worry I have about, this
bill, is that there has been a
considerable amount of coverage
over the past several days about
what could happen.

about what has happened and what
is likely to happen.
|
| 00:15:24 | I think the kind of meltdown we
are talking about sun likely,
not least because you can pump
sea water into these plants to
keep the meltdown from
occurring.

| 00:15:31 | Sea water is very corrosive to
the plants.
|
| 00:15:35 | That's the draw back of that.
|
| 00:15:36 | But I don't -- and these plants
in japan are different and
better than the one in chernobyl
which caused a major health
emergency.

is whipping this up because the
media has a wested interested in
expanding nuclear power is that
in play here.

| 00:15:55 | >> Well, maybe.
|
| 00:15:57 | Look, the temptation for a
journalist writing about a story
like this is to reach for the
worst case scenarios.

| 00:16:03 | They are the most news worthy.
|
| 00:16:04 | But I will say that, you know,
there was good reporting in the
"new york times" today about
this.

the "wall street journal" about
this.

some important pieces of good
reporting on this.

the stories.

harrowing.

read the headlines and think
about, this they won't turn
their backs on nuclear power.
