00:01:23>> I like the company.
00:01:25I like the opportunities for growth.

00:02:38>> Couric: Anthony mason.
00:02:39As alway thank you.
00:02:41E improving jobs picture didn't ease the jitters on wa wall street still shaken by yesterday's as-yet unexplained plunge and that financial crisis in greece.
00:02:51Today, the dow bounced up and down before closing with a loss of 139 points.
00:02:55It's now given back all s gains for the year.
00:02:58Business and economics correspondent rebecca jarvis is down at the new york stock exchange.
00:03:03Rebecca, one thing I guess was up on wall seet today was anxiety.
00:03:07>> Reporter: That's right, katie.
00:03:09Today's wild swings on wall street only added to the uneaseere on the trading floor of the new york stock exchange.
00:03:15Meantime, federal regulators said tay they are looking into the cause behind yesterday's historic freefall.
00:03:21The old line on wall street is " but today some are questioning whether they can still believe it.
00:03:32>> We need a stable rket and part of that is a dependable >> Reporr: The new york stock exchange canceled 4,000 transactions on its electronic trading platform they say were erroneous.
00:03:47The nasdaq voided orders on nearly 300 stocks whose prices 40 and 3:00 yesterday afternoon.
00:03:54The move could negate trades that allowed some investors to buy well-regarded companies like accenture for a penny instead of $42 and procter & gambleor half price.
00:04:04>> When you void trade, it's always disputed because presumably one side is winning AND ONE SIDE IS LOSING. >>eporter: The precise event that ignited the selloff remains a mystery.
00:04:14Some think someone who wanted to make a trade in the millions mtakenly typed in billions.
00:04:21The major stock exchanges and investigators arlooking at transactions conducted between 46 whenhe dow lost more than 300 points.
00:04:30Were things out of control.
00:04:34>> I think what happened yesterday was somewhat unique.
00:04:37>> Reporter: During selling panics, the new york stock exchange will call a brief timeout to sort what's going on.
00:04:43Instead of waiting, sellers yesterday raced to other exchanges to dump their shares.
00:04:48Another contributing factor to the selloff may ve been when ral computer trading systems halted orders at the height of the mania.
00:04:55When they pulled out.
00:04:57Other computer programs trigorrs to sell.
00:05:01>>Hoever it was, it was one or a group of people who were looking for speed rather than fa prices and they got the worst of it.
00:05:12>> Reporter: Computer program trading accounts forwo- thirds of all stocks transactions the machines buy and sell stocks thoushands of times i a fraction of a send.
00:05:26>> Speed is a great thing t human judgment is a greater thing.
00:05:28>> Reporter: And whether it was human or mechanical error, it will likely take months to sort all of this out.
00:05:32Meanwhile, managers of the biggest stock exchanges here in the united states are calling for new trading policies thacould help avert future freefalls.
00:05:39Katie?
00:05:40>> Couric: Rebecca jarvis on wall thanms, ebecca, and welcome.
00:05:43>> Thank you.
00:05:44>> Couric: Turning now to that oil spill in the gulf of mexico, the huge slick-- more than three million gallons of crude-- is now moving west toward the mississippi river delta.
00:05:54Authorities said today that could force a major port for foreign oil to close next week.
00:05:59Meanwhile, efforts to control the leak took a major step forward today.
00:06:03Ma sasanis ivece, louisiana, mark, there was a lot of suspense as the lowered that giant containment dome down into the gulf.
00:06:11>> Reporter: There really was, katie.
00:06:13Quite an image.
00:06:15A ntainment box the height of a four-story building suspended underwater 200 feet above e main leak.
00:06:22A crane began lowering all 100 tons of it into the gulf.
00:06:26Its target, the ruptured pipeli's middle leak, the ones spewing 85% of the oil.
00:06:30That's about 185,000 gallons everyday.
00:06:34It took them hours to get the box over the leak but, katie, officials by tonight they hope to get the box actually on the sea flr, have it settling over the leak into the mud.
00:06:54I understand that this has never been done before, by the way, in water this is deep.
00:06:565,000 Feet now.
00:06:57How are they expected this to work?
00:06:59>> Well,he next step, katie, would be to connect the box underwater with a surface ship and the box would siphon water to the surface ship.
00:07:06The box was guided by two robots who made sure iwould be positproperly to so e x would trap the oil.
00:07:13Then the box has to settle into the mud on the sea floor.
00:07:15Next step, connect the pipe, siphon the o up to the surface ship.
00:07:19Something else, engineers have to separate the mix of oil, water, and gas, ich is a potentially explosivprocess.
00:07:24The siphoning can start as early as next week but remember this has never been tried before.
00:07:30This is an experiment.
00:07:31It's their best hope and so far so good.
00:07:35>> Couric: Sounds great.
00:07:36Mark strassmann in venice, louisiana, thank you, mark.
00:07:38For state officials, protecting wildlife right up there with stopping the leak on their list of priorities.
00:07:45Among those threatened is th brown pelican which only came off the endangered species list this past november.
00:07:51More now from jeff corwin, a wildlife and conservation expert and special contributor to cbs news.
00:07:59>> Reporter: Just ten miles from the nesting grounds of this noisy colony of brown pelicans, more than three million gallons of oil are lurking.
00:08:08That threatens a species already decimated by the disappeae ofse marsh lands.
00:08:13How fast are they shrinking?
00:08:14>> If we talk for 20 minutes, at the end of that we will ha lost a foba field or two of land.
00:08:20>> Reporter: Coastal louisiana used to be half land, half water.
00:08:24Now these areas are more than 61% water, losing about 25 square miles of land each year.
00:08:31The pelicans nest on this coastal island for protection from pretoth c dive bomb waters rich in small fish, like mullet, their main source of food.
00:08:40>> The bir are flying out from this island, diving into the water catch that food.
00:08:44>> Reporter: Oil in the water could poison the pelicans' food supply.
00:08:49Oil-saturated feathers also provide no insulation from the cold and would rob them of their ability to float.
00:08:55The pelicans could even drown.
00:08:56So you're wiping the inside of its mouth?
00:08:58>> Right.
00:08:59>> ReporHY IS THAT?
00:09:00>> Trying to figure out what it is that he's got in there, make sure it's not oil.
00:09:05>> Reporter: At this bird rehabilitation center, they've already nursed one oiled pelican back to health.
00:09:10This one was injured but, thankfully, shows no sign of exposure to oil.
00:09:16>> Right now they don't want to leave their nest.
00:09:18That means they're going to stay, unfortunately, where the oil is.
00:09:22>> Reporter: In 1963, the brown pelican was driven to regional extinction, zero le.
00:09:27But today, remarkably, there are 50,000 of these birds, and they represent one of louisiana's most successful conservation stories.
00:09:34But with threats coming from bothitat loss and this impending oil spill, these birds may disappear once again.
00:09:42Katie?
00:09:42>> Couric: Jeff corwin.
00:09:43Jeff, thank you so much.

00:10:03Meanwhile, the questioning of algemb faisbl shahd continues, he insists he acted alone but investigators are chasing the money trail to see if he had help and from whom to carry out theotched attack.
00:10:17Overseas, the british election has become a cliffhanger.
00:10:20The official results today put the conservaves ahead of gordon bwn's labour party but 20 seats short of a majority in parliament.
00:10:27That means a lot of political wheeling and dling lies ahead before we know who will be prime minister.
00:10:33From london tonight, here's mark phillips.
00:10:35>> Reporter: This election produced no clear winner, but there was a clear loser-- gordon brown.
00:10:43Even if thsitting prime minister now wantu to shbre power to stay in power.
00:10:49>> For my part, I should make clear that I would be willing see any of the party leaders.

00:11:20While he decides who to back, gordon brown clings on at number 10 downing street.
00:11:26With no clear decision at the ballot box, the contest for the keys to this place-- the powestruggle-- has become a political street fight.
